Assistant AV Technician

0-HOUR CONTRACT. £12.82 per hour.

Would you like the opportunity to gain experience and develop your skills in AV technology and event production?

Working within an inclusive, empowering, and aspirational culture, you’ll play a key role in providing specialist support for a multitude of internal, external and student lead events at The Union. The role involves assisting in the operation and installation of industry standard AV equipment, working closely with other Union staff, clients, and student societies to ensure smooth operation of technical systems and event schedules.

Who are we?

Located in the heart of Manchester, The Union is part business, part charity, part membership body. Operating independently from Manchester Metropolitan University, our aim is to support and represent each one of our student members. Each year our growing team of around 50 full time and up to 100 part time staff, work alongside elected student leaders to make change, improve lives and help fulfil student potential.

Who do we need? (Essential)

Education and qualifications:

  • A current Manchester Met student for the academic year 24/25

Knowledge and experience:

  • Experience working to a strict time schedule
  • Ability to interact with clients in a polite and professional manner
  • Ability to work well as part of a multi-disciplined team
  • An understanding and appreciation of the principles and practice of equal opportunities
  • Experience working in live events in any capacity is preferred (bar, catering, general hospitality, etc.)

  • Aptitude for technical problem solving
  • Ability to manage working time effectively and prioritise workload appropriately
  • A flexible approach to working according to operational and customer demand
  • Professional, well presented, and courteous manner
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, able to build appropriate relationships with people at all levels

  • An ability to demonstrate the organisational values in all work activity

Who do we need? (Desirable)

Education and qualifications:

  • Level 3 or higher Music Tech or Live Events Qualification

Knowledge and experience:

  • A First Aid Certificate
  • Experience as a sound, lighting, or AV engineer
  • Knowledge of professional lighting and mixing consoles, microphones, radio systems, lighting, and PA systems
  • Knowledge of common live event electrical systems
  • Knowledge of video recording and livestream production
  • Knowledge of live event health and safety regulations
  • Knowledge of relevant software: QLab, MyDMX 3.0, OBS, Logic Pro or other DAW
