Write a note to your future self and check back in during Semester 2. Part of The Student Self Care Movement.
As usual, here’s a monthly guide from us to you on some free events in and around Manchester this month.
Where? - The Salutation Pub
When? - Every Friday
This couldn’t be more conveniently located. Right on campus, The Sal hosts an acoustic night every Friday for you to come and enjoy with your friends.
All the talent has been hand-picked by The Sal to perform and are some of the best around (an unbiased opinion, obviously).
So, if you fancy an easy-going night of acoustic tunes and cheap drinks, get yourselves over there on a Friday. Also, if you fancy getting behind the mic at the next one, get in touch on social media to get started.
Where? - Floor 6, 100 Barbirolli Square
When? - Through until June 6
If you’re as big a fan of this glorious city as we are (you chose to study here, so you must be), an exhibition to showcase Manchester’s finest artists might be your thing.
In Manchester was designed to show off just how brilliant and varied Manchester’s talent scene is, with all artists given the chance to have their work on the wall and accessed by new audiences.
Hobbyists, students, graduates, amateurs and professionals all have pieces on display, so get yourself down and have a look – there’s something for everyone.
Where? - Media City, Salford
When? - Saturday 11 June
Probably one of the first times you’ll get to see a circus act for free.
Inspired by the people of Salford, Way Above the Houses will include aerial circus acts, local voices, and local dancers - all performing choreography incorporating moving lights and illuminated umbrellas.
The performances in the exhibition are focussed on local people and what their home city of Salford means to them. Their stories will be woven into new, professional music pieces by Ted Barnes.
If you fancy a jam packed, free day out in Media City, just show up on the day.

Where? - Manchester Monastery, Gorton
When? - Wednesday 8 June, 18:00 – 20:00
We know how involved you guys have got with Climate Change activism both at The Union and in your own ways, so Manchester Histories Festival has the potential to be your choice in this guide.
The History of Climate Change was designed to develop an understanding surrounding the history of environmental problems and climate change. Also, for people to discover ways that they can take action to improve the future for themselves and others.
The event is completely free, so head down to enjoy the festival, meet those involved, and talk to them about why they decided to focus on climate change.
You can also still check out the stats from The Union’s own sustainability campaign, ReThink Waste – ran during Go Green Week 2022.
Where? - Whitworth Locke
When? - Friday 3 June, 17:00 – 22:00
Looking for a place to start your Friday night off, whilst supporting local talent?
Conveniently located again, Whitworth Locke is a 10-minute walk from campus, and has some of the most chilled out vibes in the city centre. Although, mix this with some of the most exciting new Manchester DJ’s and the vibes might not be so chilled.
So, grab your mates and start your Jubilee weekend off in the Conservatory Bar and enjoy sets from the likes of Jim Bane, Swindell’s and Pablo Blanquito. No booking required either, just show up.
