Write a note to your future self and check back in during Semester 2. Part of The Student Self Care Movement.
Have a look at our Welcome schedule and see what you would like to go to during the week. Swap plans with some of your new friends if you’re nervous about coming alone, but don’t worry there will be lots of friendly faces there to welcome you. You don’t have to say yes to everything, and in fact doing so may mean you over do it! So pick a few and allow yourself to pace the fun week ahead.
This seems such an simple one but you’d be surprised how many forget! It’s easily done when you’re out and about or living away for the first time to be enjoying coffees, diet coke and drinks in the evening – but if you don’t have regular water your body isn’t going to like it. Water will help keep your energy levels up, ward away the dreaded Freshers Flu and refresh you for the day.
Whether you’re living away from home for the first time or getting to grips with trying new things, it’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed during this period (and you won’t be the only one). Take time to yourself and have a few quiet moments where you do things that make you feel calm and happy. Don’t be hard on yourself if you change your mind about attending an event or social opportunity, just take it at your own pace.
A familiar voice can be really good for your wellbeing, so if you can get a chance to phone some friends and family during your first week at university. It will add some stability into your new schedule.
Get regular rest in – if you have a later night then consider having a lie in the next day or naps where possible. Remember to fuel your body and try to eat at regular intervals with the nutrients that it will need to keep you energised and healthy.
If you ever are lost on campus, need somewhere quieter to sit and chill or just fancy a chat – come along to see us in The Union! Remember we also have our Advice Services on offer to help students with funding, academic problems, health, housing, any hate crime related issues and budgeting.
