Welcome, you are now officially a member of Manchester Metropolitan University and, consequently, a member of the Students’ Union. I personally cannot wait to meet you all. Manchester is a wonderful, vibrant and diverse city and there’s always something going on.

Here are some tips - from me to you - about how to make the most out of your Welcome Week and your first month at Manchester Met.

- If you’re in halls, get to know your flatmates. You may think you all have nothing in common with them, but you’re probably all in the same boat. I guarantee they’re just as nervous as you are about living away from home.

- Food is expensive. You may fall into the trap of Deliveroo and Uber Eats after you’ve realised your fridge won’t be filled by magic anymore. Trust me, you will save a fortune if you do a shop on your first day and stock up on the essentials. Bulk items like pasta and rice are great to get in and you can make loads of meals with them.

- If you’re a commuter, you can get a bus pass from the Finance office on the first floor. You can get a month, academic term or academic year pass – whichever suits you best, and as an added bonus, you can even pay on your met card. If you don’t fancy catching a bus, or you’ve missed your last one – Uber is a brilliant way to get around the city. It’s safe, you know who your driver will be and you know where they’re going.

- Remember, you don’t have to go out every night during Welcome Week. Don’t put so much pressure on yourself to go to all the club nights – even if your flat mates are going. There’s still plenty to see and do in the days.

- Your Residential Advisor (RA) can be a godsend in times of crisis. They will come to your flat every week just to check you’re okay. Maybe offer them a brew and pick their brains on their own university experience.

- When I moved to University for the first time I didn’t even think to register with a GP and a dentist, but I’d recommend to do it before you need it and you will be thankful. The process can be a little lengthy to register and get an appointment, so find a local practice to wherever you are living in case you need an appointment.

- If you’re a parent, I’d definitely suggest that you visit the Advice Centre – they’re a really helpful bunch and will be able to research any funding you may be eligible for throughout your time as a student.

- Lastly, explore the beautiful city you now call home. If Manchester has always been your home, take pride in your city and show it off in full to those who may be new.

Enjoy your first month and we’ll always be here for you. Amie x
