An Introduction to Your Education Officer, Forum

Wednesday 02-10-2024 - 09:00

Whether you’re a new or returning student at Manchester Met, I want to wish you a heartfelt and warm welcome!

I’m so excited to represent and support you as your Education Officer this year. At Manchester Met, there're so many opportunities to grow, find your people, explore your interests and create your future.

🤔What is my role as your Education Officer?

My job, with the rest of the elected Officer team, is to make sure that when the university makes decisions involving students, it’s only to benefit you.

As your Education Officer I focus on curricula, learning, teaching and making sure the student voice influences university decisions. I was elected by the student body, so I’ll be checking in with you regularly to keep you updated about my work.

📓My Priorities for the Academic Year

Along with helping students to be prepared for the world of work on graduation, here are some of the other things I’ll be focusing on in my role:

  • It's important to me that all students have the best possible opportunity to reach their full potential. I am especially focused on addressing differential awarding gaps— the disparities that result in students from certain groups or communities being less likely to achieve higher grades or progress into advanced levels of study.

  • I want to make sure that students can stay engaged in their studies and perform well, preventing them from dropping out due to disappointment. Most students stay and thrive at Manchester Met, but I want to make sure as many students as possible achieve success. You can help us do this by taking part in The Union’s Induction Survey later in the month. We’ll use what you say to influence the university to make positive changes.

  • To succeed in their studies, students must have the financial resources to support their education. At The Union, we understand how financially tough these times are for students. So, all the Student Officers will be leading a Money Matters campaign (there’ll be more on this later in the year, so stay tuned!).

  • I sit in on lots of university meetings and get to speak with those who make the decisions, but I need our Course Reps to help me voice students' needs and wants. Last year, 1700 Course Reps helped us make a difference. I’ll be working with the university to create a system that helps our amazing volunteers to perform their vital roles. I’m planning to have this up and running before the end of the academic year.

  • As well as our undergrads, I want to make sure our growing doctoral community is supported. So, I’ll be working with the university and doctoral candidates to build more effective ways to amplify their voices and make positive change

💡My Tips for Uni

  • One thing I’d really recommend checking out is the Uni’s RISE programme. It’s a brilliant way to help build on your studies, develop skills and shape your employability.

  • The Union puts on so many events throughout the year, so make sure to keep an eye out for what’s coming up! I’ll be working on the Union’s International Student and BAME projects, so if you’re interested in getting involved, we’d love to hear from you!

  •  Look for societies and clubs that interest you. And if you don’t fancy anything why not create your own?

  • Make sure you feed back to your Course Rep! They can use your suggestions to help make uni better for people on your course.
