Write a note to your future self and check back in during Semester 2. Part of The Student Self Care Movement.
Hosted by current Student President, Hussain El-Amin, and The Union’s Chief Executive, Matt Robinson, the evening was an opportunity to celebrate the inspirational students who have made a huge difference to the community.
Awards were presented to 12 individuals who had gone beyond expectations to enhance student’s experiences at MMU.
This year also saw the introduction of the new Outstanding Campaigner award, which celebrates those who have created, developed and delivered a student campaign which has had a positive impact on the student and wider community.

The event also featured guest speakers - Jessica Durham, Volunteer Executive and Training Lead North for The Prince’s Trust and Richard Brooks, Campaigns Manager for Step Up to Serve. In an inspiring speech, he told students "the skills that you have gained, experiences you have had and people you have met will hold you in very good stead for the rest of your life” and that student's unions were the place to start if they wanted to change the world.
It has been an outstanding year in volunteering. Sports volunteers have clocked up a cracking 11,000 volunteer hours, and a group of eight volunteers have also been working with the Salvation Army Housing Association to organise the UK’s biggest homeless football
event. As ever, clubs and societies have been working hard across the Manchester and Cheshire campuses to put on exciting and inclusive events for students.
We have welcomed a new team of Equality and Diversity volunteers and student ambassadors. They will work with The Union and the University on a new collaborative project aiming to improve the student experience and academic attainment for Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic students and those who have progressed from BTEC qualifications.
Our incredible Course Reps have continued to work exceptionally hard to represent their fellow students and give them a voice.
This year student volunteers have developed a campaign called The Elephant in the Room about tackling sexual violence and harassment. Focusing on healthy relationships and sexual consent, this campaign is all about speaking up on a difficult issue and improving the knowledge of our student community.
We’re proud of each and every one of our Union volunteers. They rock.
