Write a note to your future self and check back in during Semester 2. Part of The Student Self Care Movement.
We’re continuing our support for you during the cost of living crisis (and also just wanting to provide you with some useful, wholesome content), by doing some exploring to come up with this guide to some cheap places on campus you can get a hot meal.
You may’ve spotted this over on our Instagram earlier this week, but we’re here again to outline some of the best options for you.
So, if you find yourself on campus, wanting a hot meal and not wanting to break the bank, check out the below.
We also hope you’re not hungry whilst reading this.
Now, we know some of you aren’t keen on the (huuuuge) 10-minute walk to the Brook’s Building, but Birley Kitchen is there, and it’s got a great selection of hot food.
We walked over earlier this week to see what we could find.
You can get yourself a jacket potato with one filling for £2.40 and two fillings for only £2.95, for those of you who have to get cheese and beans.
A hot slice of pizza at Birley Kitchen is only £2, with the same price for a portion of chips. So, for only £4 you can get a decent sharing of chips and a pizza slice of your choice, with vegetarian options available, too.
The Grove is relatively new to Manchester Met, and it’s already one of the go-to spots for some food and a place to chill out.
Located on the ground floor of the Grosvenor East Building (those of you who’ve raced to get the best spot on the balcony over All Saints will know where this is), there’re some pretty good options for food.
Our featured meal will probably benefit those early risers best, and it just so happens that The Union also does the same option.
For just £3.50, you can get a packed breakfast bun. There’re loads of fillings to choose from and both locations do vegetarian and vegan options, too.
And, for those of you who aren’t morning people, the breakfast options are served from 10:00 – 17:00 in The Union.
The Business School’s got to be one of the best places to get food on campus. There’re tonnes of smaller venues in the main food court (South Atrium), with loads of different options.
There’re salad bar options, more pizza, bao buns, chicken, Italian, Indian, and even a dedicated ice cream stall (although prices do vary across larger options).
Our standout meals were the loaded nacho fries (our favourite) from Met Yard. These were only £3.95 for a decent sized portion.
As well as this (yes, we did eat multiple meals for this article), we got chicken gyozas from Mein + Bao. These came with veggies and a pot of soy sauce for dipping, too, and they’re only £2.75.
We know there’ll be loads more options for cheap food around campus. This guide was just to highlight a few of our favourites, and we hope that it’ll encourage you to go out and find your own without worrying about spending too much.
Feel free to let us know in the comments on Instagram if you’ve found any other options you think will help other students out.
Don’t forget to keep up to date with our Cost of Living Support page too. We’ll be updating regularly, so keep an eye out.
