Estranged Students solidarity week is a campaign organised by the charity Stand Alone, which provides advice and support to people experiencing estrangement.

What is an estranged student?

An estranged student is someone studying without the support or approval of their parents or guardians. Estranged students will have had no contact with their parents or guardians for a significant period, usually 12 months or more.

How Manchester Met supports Estranged students

Manchester Metropolitan University has the highest number of estranged students in the UK.

The Inclusion Service at MMU provides advice and support to students who are estranged from their families, as well as care leavers, students with caring responsibilities, pregnant students and under 18s.

Students who register with the Inclusion Service can book in a meeting with an Adviser. You will have a main point of contact throughout your time at university for any questions you may have.

Tips for estranged students

  • If you’re struggling to find accommodation, please contact the university’s accommodation team. The accommodation team often prioritise estranged students and do not always require a guarantor for MMU owned accommodation.
  • Register with the Inclusion Service.
  • Contact our Advice Service for support regarding health, mental wellbeing, academic problems, housing, debt or budgeting
  • Contact the financial support team to find out about the estranged students bursary.
  • Join a club or society through The Union to meet likeminded people
