So, you’re about to start your university journey, but where do you start?
We’ve put together some tips we think will help you as a new student – from one student to another…
“University can be a busy, hectic experience at times so make sure in your first few weeks you spend as much time as you can getting to know your new city. Freshers week will give you a great opportunity to meet new people and try new things but it’s not your only chance. Using the time you have, before you have assignments and coursework to think about, is the optimal time to get the best out of your new home. Even if you grew up in the same city, there is always more to explore”.
“The first few weeks at university can be overwhelming between trying to make new friends and getting to grips with university life. Sometimes this can be tiring, but it’s perfectly okay to take a break whether that means taking time for yourself, visiting home or even just saying no to a club night. The great thing about university is that after Welcome Week passes, the chance to meet new people or try something new is still there, so no need to worry about missing out. The university also offers plenty of resources and people to speak to if you’re feeling at all overwhelmed.”
“Have you ever wanted to learn sign language? Do you have a love for all things K-pop? Maybe you want to try your hand at coding? This is the perfect chance to find a new passion or find people who share the same interests as you. The thought of joining a new society can be daunting but they’re always open to new people, throughout the whole year. In the first few weeks everyone is in the same boat and societies will hold socials for everyone to meet and get to know each other. So, even if you show up on your own, you’ll be made to feel welcome.”
“Taking some time to learn about what your university and The Union have on offer can massively pay off later in the year. Discounts in stores and cafes, library opening times, or where to get tips on referencing are just a handful of the resources available to you so make sure you find out as much as you can. The Union website has everything you need, as well as contact details if you’d like to speak to someone in person. The resources can span from academic help and mental health support to amazing exclusive offers to make your time at university even better.” University is a great and unique experience, and it’s different for everyone. Whether you’re new to the city or you’ve lived here your whole life, university can be a fresh start. We hope these tips help you settle in, and make sure to follow our socials to keep up to date with what we have planned for you. If you’d like to know more, please check out our website.
