Every year on 31 March, Trans Day of Visibility is observed across the world. The day celebrates transgender people and shine a light on the discrimination faced by those in the community.
TDoV was born in 2009, when transgender activist, Rachel Crandall, wanted to highlight a lack of recognition within LGBT knowledge of trans people. There was also frustration that the only main transgender focussed day was Transgender Day of Remembrance, which was centred around mourning those who have been murdered in hate crimes.
The Transgender Pride flat was designed by Monica Helmes, and first used at a Pride Parade in Pheonix, Arizona in 2000
The first Trans Day of Visibility, intended to celebrate living members of the community, was held on 31 March 2009. Since then, the community has witnessed huge change in the way that trans people are seen by the world. Visibility towards trans folk has multiplied in the last 10 years, whether it’s from celebrities coming out or growing access to social media platforms, but not all exposure is positive.
Trans people often feel as though they’ve got little control around the narrative that surrounds the community. So, this year, just like every year, the call for trans and non-binary voices to be uplifted, and their contributions to the world be highlighted is louder than ever.
This year, the TDov hashtags are #IAmEnough – for trans and non-binary people to use as a message of strength, resilience and community, and #YouAreEnough - for allies of the community to show solidary and support.
