For each week of LGBTQ History Month, The Union are shining a spotlight on those in the community. We're asking them to tell us a little bit about themselves and what the month means to them. This week, we've spoken to Beck.
My name’s Beck and I'm from Manchester. I'm currently studying Integrated Health and Social Care where I focus on mental health, health inequalities, service provision and interdisciplinary care.
I'm also on the committee for the LGBTQ+ Society at The Union.
Being on the committee for the LGBTQ+ Society at MMU has positively impacted my sense of belonging as I create and manage events for the LGBTQ+ community at this university, giving me the opportunity to also make new friends and bond with others who are similar to me.
There is a vibrant LGBTQ+ community at MMU, and it is crucial that they have a place to meet each other and feel comfortable which is why we create these events!
I haven’t faced any challenges as MMU has, in my experience, been an inclusive place to study.
It is crucial for the LGBTQ+ community to be treated equally to others, so it is important for people to act as allies and help us to feel safe and respected. If we do not feel accepted into society, we will begin to hide and not be ourselves, which will impact our mental health.
