Write a note to your future self and check back in during Semester 2. Part of The Student Self Care Movement.
The Union has launched a new sustainability campaign, in collaboration with Green Impact.
ReThink Waste is designed to give students the resources to be more sustainable, as well as responding to student’s suggestions on how to be a better Union.
Here’s how you can get involved in rethinking your waste at The Union:
+ The Union now has installed teracycle friendly bins around the building for you to get rid of your soft plastic packaging, such as crisp and nut packets.
+ The Union are also working in partnership with the KP Recycling Scheme who collect snack packets from our bins every two months. This waste is then sent to a recycling point and the weight of the collection is converted into cash and donated to charity.
+ Teracycle have a list on their website to search for recycling points near you.
+ The Union have partnered up with Hey Girls – a community interest company who aim to eradicate period poverty in the UK. Plastic free sanitary products can now be found in The Union toilets, and the Advice Office for free.
There’s no shame in not being able to afford what you need, so pop in and grab what you need.
+ The Union shop have loads of Fairtrade and sustainable products, ranging from Fairtrade coffee to reusable bamboo tissues.
+ As part of Fairtrade Fortnight - Fairtrade clothing at The Shop is now on offer at 20% off for the next two weeks from 22 Feb – 7 March.
+ Fancy a coffee? Starbucks are also offering 20p off any hot drink when you bring your own reusable cup. 200 of these were given away for free by The Union during Go Green Week.
The Union hosted several sustainable events during Go Green Week too, such as:
+ Stitched Up hosted their Wardrobe Surgery workshop at The Union on 16 Feb. Students were taught how to repair damages and return clothes to their former glory.
+ Student led clothing event, Swap It was held on 18 Feb. Students brought along their unwanted items and swapped them with others to take home some ‘new’ pre-loved garments.
+ 44 of you came along to Swap It and exchanged over 200 items of clothing throughout the day.
+ Student led project, Don8 It was made by one of our Fashion Promotion students, Caitlyn Keeble. Caitlyn used her passion for sustainability to bring free kitchen items to students who couldn’t afford them.
+ Students donated their unwanted kitchen items to The Union during Welcome Week. Over 60 items were donated and those who needed the items were encouraged to come and take what they needed for free.
+ Throughout Go Green Week, free reusable MMU coffee cups were given out at The Union. Over 200 of these cups were given away to you lot – and these can also still be used to get your 20p off in Starbucks.
+ The Salutation and The Food Hall worked together during Go Green Week too, to bring you 10% off all meat free meals, too.
Have your say – submit your ideas on how The Union can increase their sustainability efforts and improve student resources.
Don’t forget to take advantage of the Fairtrade Fortnight offers on at The Union Shop from 22 Feb – 7 March.
