Student Officer Elections 2025: Nominations are now open, get yourself in the running.
November is one of the hardest times of year as a student.
I remember when I was a student; I called it the “sink, swim, or float” period. Because it was during this time that I genuinely considered dropping out, and started telling myself, “Maybe uni just isn’t for me.”
But as hard as uni is – remember the fact you’re even here is a massive achievement.
This part of the year can bring on imposter syndrome. You might start doubting if you belong or feel might even feel disconnected from people you’ve met. You might’ve realised that you don’t quite fit into any particular “clique.” and that’s fine.
Finding your people at uni can take time—just because you’ve not met your best mates in the first few months doesn’t mean you won’t later.
Try to not compare yourself to what people put on social media. It’s so easy to feel left out when you see others absolutely living their best lives, but let's face it, most of the time the reality is way different.
If you’re not invited to someone else’s table, that’s okay—make your own.
Sometimes stepping out of your comfort zone can make all the difference. If moneys a concern, try free or low-cost campus activities to keep both your body and mind active.
Remember, your physical and mental well-being are deeply connected. November might feel overwhelming but hang in there—you’re more resilient than you know.
There’s so much going on at The Union and Uni, so you’re bound to find your people, there’s things like:
Give It A Go events: These events are literally designed to help you meet new people and try new things. And most of them are either free or low cost.
Societies: Did you know at The Union we literally have over 130 societies? Even if none of these call out to you, there’s always room for you to start your own.
MMU Sports: As Sports Officer, of course I'd say have a look at any teams you might be interested in. These can even just be social sports where it's just for fun!
Whilst you’re here, I thought I might as well give you an update on what I've been up to.
Term 1:
In the first term of uni, I’ve been focused on long-term policy changes. A big priority is an emphasis on the "after 13:00" policy for undergrads involved in sport. This will also then give more opportunities for postgraduates to get involved in sports. Whilst this might not impact current students it will massively benefit future students. More on this soon.
I'm also so excited to announce that I'll be collaborating with our Pro-Vice Chancellor of Education on a concussion awareness campaign. This will aim to enhance both safety and engagement for all students and staff participating in sports.
Term 2:
For term two, my focus will then be on initiatives that have more of an immediate impact on current students. I'll continue supporting VAULT, The Union’s revamped club night that saw its highest attendance since 2017 with over 800 students on Halloween.
Don’t forget to grab your tickets for the next Christmas event on December 4.
I’ll also be working on promoting LGBTQ+ and BAME inclusion in sports, aiming to make our campus a more inclusive space for everyone. If you’d like to get involved in this or have any ideas don’t hesitate to message me!
Finally, I’d just like to say a massive thank you to Shazeaa, our previous Societies and Development Officer (22-24), as we now have a fantastic new community kitchen open on the second floor of The Union.
This space is designed for you to relax, reheat food with microwaves, and enjoy access to a boiling water tap and sink.
So, get over to The Union, it’s all for you.
