Moving into accommodation with new people can be an unnerving time for many. The fear of the unknown can creep in, and people will be worried. However, hopefully these few tips will help when moving in with new people and remember you are never alone.

Make your room your own:

Bring items from home to your new accommodation with you such as bedding, picture frames, posters, and fairy lights, just to name a few. These little touches can turn a plain room into a home away from home and make you feel more comfortable whilst living there.

Setting boundaries:

Making this clear from the day you move in is super important. Everyone has their own boundaries, morals, and values and these should be shared with the people you’re now living with so that everyone can be aware of them and be respectful of each other and live alongside one another happily.

Establish a rota:

A great thing to have when moving in with new people is a housework rota. It’s not fair for one person to do everything so delegating jobs can really help. It saves confusion and frustration. You could all sit down together as a team to make a rota that everyone is happy with. People may even volunteer for certain jobs!

Take time for yourself:

For an hour of the day, close your door, shut the world out and take some time for yourself. Whether that means listening to music, reading a book, or taking a short nap, it’s okay to take a step back from everything and to give yourself the space and time you need to just breathe.

Stay in contact with family and friends from home:

Make sure to contact the people who you love most in your life regularly and luckily technology is amazing for that nowadays! Facetiming a family member or friend can really help on days when you may be feeling a little bit homesick. They can give you the little boost that you need, and you will feel much better for speaking to them.
