Write a note to your future self and check back in during Semester 2. Part of The Student Self Care Movement.
Tell us a little bit about the society.
“The society really started this year – the previous third years had spent some time setting it up, and so it really came to fruition this year. We meet on a Tuesday from half past six until eight just to do some rehearsals. It’s an open discussion as to what we sing, you kind of just bring a song and we’ll see if we can work with it, and then if it sounds cool then we’ll incorporate into the stuff we do. We meet in the Axis music rooms but that will change next year, and we’re unsure where it’ll be yet so keep your eyes peeled in the New Year.”
What are you up to today at the Christmas Fair?
“We just sang some Christmas carols alongside the Christian Union. This evening we are performing in the Axis open space with the Christian Union again, singing more carols – it’s very informal. There’ll be a pop-up bar too, which is always good!”
Have you got any festive socials planned?
“We all come together usually and sit around and have a brew. Nothing planned as of yet, but we will have a discussion next week and see what we fancy. Possible we’ll go bowling and grab pizza – something like that.”
Have you got a favourite Christmas carol?
“My favourite personally? I don’t know, that’s quite tough! ‘Away in a Manger’ gets people joining in, as everyone knows it because you sing it from primary school, so it goes down well. I think my favourite is probably ‘Hark the Herald Angels Sing’ – I love that one.”
What would you say to anyone interested in coming along and getting involved?
“You don’t have to be on a music course, you just have to have a passion for singing. If you can sing, or you would like to help in any way then our door is always open.”
