Have a little look on their Twitter and you’ll see that MMUC Cheer have been a busy bunch since September, with taster sessions and training, plus preparing to host MMUC’s Got Talent in December. We chatted to Beth Kershaw, Chair of the club, (second year Sport and Exercise Science) to find out a bit more about them and what else they have planned for this year.

Tell us a little bit about the club.

“So, we do tumbles, gymnastics, dance and stunts. We are a ‘for all’ sport, so we have a level one, which is the lowest level, but it means anyone can participate. You don’t have to be flexible and you don’t have to be able to dance – we can teach you all that stuff and it’s a really good thing to get involved in. We are a competition team too, so we do two competitions a year, normally in the spring term. We have done a few little cheer things at games and we want to get some more of those in. It’s a challenge with the campus closing and teams merging, but we want to show as much support as possible for the teams so we can help them.”

What competitions have you got coming up this year?

“So we have our two competitions in February and March, and we’ve got our ‘Lip-Sync Battle’ event returning in third term where we raise money for charity. We did it last year and raised over £500 –we want to try to get more than that this year.  That was all for a charity close to last year’s coach’s heart, so that was really good and we got loads of support. We did a cake sale too and we have other charity events planned. We want to put a bid in for Project Cheshire for something that all sports teams and societies can be involved in.”

What do you get up to outside of training?

“The social side of it is brilliant. We have socials every Wednesday and we do a lot of things outside of uni. It doesn’t even have to cost a lot of money either – we have film nights in and sleepovers so it’s one big family.”

What would you say to anyone thinking about getting involved in Cheerleading in Cheshire?

“Definitely do it – 100%. I joined Cheer because one of the girls said she wasn’t really flexible and I wasn’t either, but the first day I got there she was doing the splits. I still can’t do the splits, but I’ll get there! It’s a great experience – you get to do things you probably wouldn’t have the opportunity to do outside of uni life. If you can’t do something we’re all supportive towards getting someone to do the best they do and get there.”
