Manchester is a fantastic city for food, it has thousands of different cafes, coffee shops, bars and restaurants for you to choose from, with cuisines from across the globe and the perfect atmosphere for every occasion. Manchester Metropolitan University’s campuses are lucky to be surrounded by so many amazing places to eat, drink, shop and socialise. There are so many great places to go that the choice might seem a bit overwhelming, but hopefully this article can help!

Hatch (@hatchmcr)

Hatch is an amazing food, drinks, retail and events venue right opposite MMU’s All Saint’s Campus on Oxford Road. It’s a great space to meet with friends after lectures or evening food and drinks, they have multiple food vendors selling all types of food and drinks and host great events (like their Halloween fancy dress dog parade, check it out!). If you’re after a quick coffee and cake check out Takk, right opposite MMU’s John Dalton building. The whole venue is made up of brightly coloured shipping containers and is covered in fairy lights so you can miss it!

The Business School (@growmeatfree)

The Business School is one of the biggest buildings on MMU’s All Saints Campus and is right next door to the library. It is a great place to go in between your lectures or if you’re having a break from a library study session. You’ll be spoilt for choice as this building has not one but three places to eat! Chose from the kitchen (for hot food and big meals), the café (for coffee, sandwiches and snacks), or Grow Café, an entirely meat free café developed by the University and the student-led MetMUnch team. All these vendors are on the ground floor of the buildings so you won’t get lost, and you can use your Met Card and MCR MET Food App in each one too.

Kim’s Kitchen (@kimskitchenmanchester)

Kim’s is an amazing café bar right by MMU’s Birley campus, in the heart of Hulme. The Kitchen has been there for a few years now but has had a recent makeover and looks amazing, it has fantastic outside seating for sunny days (and cosy indoor tables for the rainy ones). Check out the ‘Reno’s Salt & Pepper Chips’ or the ‘Crispy Fish Fillet Burger’, they’re both incredible. It’s a great place to hang out with friends after a long day of classes in the Brooks Buildings, or to chill on your own with a coffee and a book.

Eighth Day (@eigthdayveg)

This café and shop is right next door to MMU’s new Institute of Sport buildings and just across the road from All Saints Park. Everything here is vegetarian or vegan, sustainable, and ethical. They’ve got a cosy café downstairs, or you can grab food to go at their counter. Try one of their hot ‘Bolognaise Calzones’ and enjoy it in the park (just don’t let the squirrels steal it!).

Buzzrocks (@buzzrocksmcr)

Located just opposite Birley’s student halls, Buzzrocks is a great place to grab a hearty lunch after a lecture (or to enjoy snuggled up in bed after a big night out). This 30 year old family run spot serves a range or amazing Caribbean dishes, and arguably the best gravy in Manchester.

Casa Mexicana (@casamexicanamanchester)

This Mexican restaurant and takeaway serves amazing burritos, tacos, nachos and quesadillas. It’s the perfect spot for a bite to eat after a busy day in the John Dalton building (it’s just across the road on Chester Street), or a study session at the library. Sit upstairs to enjoy the incredible mural artwork and help yourself to as much hot sauce as you can handle, the restaurant stock a range of Jarritos sodas and Mexican beers. Once you’ve visited you’ll want to keep coming back, so grab yourself a loyalty card to get a free meal!

The Union (@theunionmmu)

It would be wrong to write an article about food and drink on campus without mentioning us! The Union has a fantastic range of food and drinks, you grab a meal deal in the shop, enjoy a Starbucks Coffee with friends in the café, or relax with a pub lunch and pint in The Salutation. There’s always something going on in The Union so you’ll never be bored, but if it is peace and quiet you’re after you can enjoy your coffee in one of the relaxing chill-out or study spaces.
