The Heat & Eat Station is ready- drop by to heat up your lunch and take a break.
Unfortunately, I have no idea what that sort of life is – however I have been to 42’s. More importantly, I’m currently living the life of a sports officer here at MMU.
It’s been a while since my last blog, with Spexit now looking to be in full working transition, we’ve welcomed a new season – welcome winter – or as we normally say: hello, Manchester. There’s been an incredible amount of stuff going on with all things sport, this term feels like one of the most jam-packed in MMU history. Student led events have been big talking points – we’ve had Silent Disco by Rounders, Disco Dodgeball in Cheshire by Basketball, Fight Night Forever by Taekwondo and Pong Masters by Netball. All four events have raised the bar (sadly not in a penn/teller David Blain Shazam way), especially with both Rounders and Netball setting up brand new events. The work and effort gone into these events has been inspiring to watch. So many club and committee members working together all in aid of good causes is one of the main reasons I adore our students here. So far this term sport student led events have raised over £5000!
In probably the stormiest weather possible these past few months, I launched my Ride-A-Long campaign. I’ve accompanied our sport clubs to their fixtures and watched them in action. This has been a personal highlight of being an officer so far – I get to learn about all the sports we have (thank you for being so patient ahaha), and nothing beats cheering them on every week. I’ve attended fixtures on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays and got to 17 different teams matches. I’ve experienced everything from being soaked through with Hockey to being a ball boy at American Football, each week has been unique. It’s been an honor for me to join in and every team has been incredibly welcoming, every week I keep seeing close knit families forming from all our teams; this is why I believe sport works so well at MMU. I’ve still so many more to get to, so if I’ve not seen you yet, I’ll be seeing you soon.
November saw us kick off our first sport campaign. Teams collaborated with the LGBT+ Society to promote Rainbow Laces 2018. This was such a fantastic driven campaign which saw sports teams wear rainbow laces throughout the week at their training sessions and matches. The LGBT+ society ran a stall at The Union where sports teams could pick up the laces and chat with the society about how everyone can work together to make sport more inclusive. This was a great way to kick off our sport driven campaign this year – well done to all students involved in the activities.
This first term in office has been incredible, I would like to thank everyone who has been a part of it, especially the sport students and teams who have welcomed me week in week out. I am excited about next term and look forward to working with you all. Together, we are shaping sport at MMU together we can make the positive changes you deserve.
Have a great few weeks off, Sports Officer’s final thought: take care of yourselves and each other.
