Looking for something to do in December? Here's a round-up of some of the best things for you to do in Manchester:
Visit the markets
The markets in Albert Square are always the first signs of Christmas in the city, with giant, glowing santa perching on top of the Town Hall – but it's the last time we'll be seeing them there for four years. So, make sure you get your bratwurst fix before they move to a new location next year.
Ice skating in the city centre
Just around the corner from campus is HOME – along with all the bars and restaurants of First Street – is the ice rink where you can do your best Bambi impression. It only costs £10 with your student card, and it's open until January 6th – ideal for a December date night, or a day out with friends or family.
Get cosy with a film night
Avoid the cold and enjoy a free film (and free popcorn) with our Diversity and Inclusion Ambassador's screening of the coming-of-age comedy drama, Dope. If that's not for you, and you need some film-spiration, you can vote for the ultimate Christmas film on Twitter and join the battle for the ultimate festive flick.
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of The Snowman (the wholesome children’s story about a snowman coming to life, not the weird 2017 horror movie) – the people that brought bees to the city have returned with snowmen all around MediaCity. Explore the Quays and see how many you can find.
Bring in 2019 at Albert Square
Join your fellow Mancunians for a free and family-friendly fireworks display in Albert Square. Brave the chill and see the countdown to midnight on the big screen, before the sky lights up to ring in the New Year.
See the Emmeline Pankhurt statue unveiled
2018 marked the centenary of the Representation of the People Act, which gave some women and most men the right to vote. Explore the history of those that campaigned for this at the People’s History Museum, ahead of the unveiling of Emmeline Pankhurst’s statue. Join fellow students and MMU staff from 11:15 on December 14th in All Saints Park to hear music from singer-songwriter Claire Mooney, before joining a procession walking up Oxford Road to see the ceremony.
