Update: What Your Officers Have Been Up To...

Thursday 12-12-2024 - 14:06

To say your Officers have been busy this Semester would be an absolute understatement.

From representing students at the NUS Lobbying Day in London—discussing issues like guarantors for student housing with MPs—to launching innovative campaigns aimed at putting more money in students’ pockets, they’ve done it all.

As a refresher, the Student Officer team is dedicated to four key priorities to better your experience at Manchester Met:

  • Money
  • Personal Development
  • Community and Belonging
  • Visibility

Here’s just a look at what they’ve achieved so far this semester...

Money

In November, we kicked off our Money Matters campaign because, let’s face it, being a student right now is tough.

This project is all about tackling the stuff that matters most to you like:

  • Housing
  • Getting more cash in your pocket
  • Cutting down extra costs
  • Making sure everyone can access support

Using our survey, we’re gathering your stories, your struggles, and your ideas to take straight to the University to advocate for your wants and needs. We’re also working on things like renters’ rights, ways to save money, and making the true cost of uni life more transparent.

Throughout the project we’ll be putting on events that are designed to help you with budgeting and ways to save money. So, keep your eyes peeled👀

Another campaign created by your Officers is the Union Cupboard—a fantastic initiative designed to make student life easier and more sustainable🌍💚

The project provides everyone on campus with access to free items like clothes, kitchenware, and books, helping to ease financial pressures while reducing waste. It’s all about sharing resources, promoting sustainability, and fostering a stronger sense of community at Manchester Met.

You might’ve also noticed a new installation on the second floor of The Union building. This is our brand-new Heat and Eat station!

With rising costs, we know budgeting can be tough, so this space gives you access to microwaves, a boiling water tap, and a sink for easy clean-up, so you can enjoy affordable meals—whether you're heating up leftovers or grabbing something from The Shop.

But this Isn’t just about convenience. This project is all about creating a community space where students can relax, enjoy a meal, and even catch up on assignments in The Study, right next door💛

Personal Development

During National Self-Care Week (18-22 November) The Student Self Care Movement was launched! This campaign is all about recognising the importance of personal development and understanding how different this can look for everyone🌱

During the campaign week we hosted a series of stalls and events across campus, focusing on five key areas of personal development:

  • Emotional
  • Mental
  • Physical
  • Social
  • Professional

As part of the campaign, the “Your Development Era” podcast was also launched. In this, students share their real-life journeys—the challenges they’ve faced, the lessons they’ve learned, and how they’ve overcome obstacles. Episodes 1, 2 and 3 are out now!

Although the official National Self-Care Week has passed it’s still not too late to get involved with the project! Our Note to Self-initiative is still live.

This is your chance to write a message, commitment, or goal to your future self—something you can look back on to reflect on your progress. We’ll gather all the Notes to Self and send them back to you in Semester 2.

Finally, an upcoming campaign in the new year is SHAG Week. This focuses on promoting awareness around sex and relationships. This campaign aims to encourage open, sometimes uncomfortable, conversations about important topics, including:

  • Sexual Health
  • Healthy Relationships
  • Consent and Safety

SHAG Week will give the opportunity for students to engage with these crucial topics, creating a more informed and supportive environment for everyone as we head into the new year. More on this soon!

Community and Belonging

Another ongoing project by your Officers is Union Living Room. This space, shared with the Heat and Eat Station, is designed to foster a sense of community and belonging at Manchester Met. It’ll be a relaxed, welcoming place where students can come together, have a chat, and feel right at home.
