Write a note to your future self and check back in during Semester 2. Part of The Student Self Care Movement.
The Union and the University are committed to providing a safe, welcoming and supportive campus environment. We are here to support you if you have been affected by a Hate Crime or discrimination.
A Hate Crime or Hate Incident is any targeted comment, action or hostility based on prejudice towards another person due to their race, religion, sexual orientation, disability, gender or alternative sub-culture.
Hate crimes and incidents come in many different forms and are not necessarily acts of physical violence. They can include verbal abuse such as name-calling and offensive jokes, or online abuse. It may be more subtle in the form of microaggressions.
You may be unsure as to whether you have experienced a hate crime or discrimination as you may feel you experience this every day. However, making a report allows the police and University to better understand what is happening and to deal with it and maybe allow them to prevent an incident from happening to someone else. Remember to do what you feel comfortable with though and don’t feel pressured by outside influences – please speak to one of our advisors if you’re unsure or want to have a further discussion regarding what you have experienced. Reporting is a personal choice, not a duty.
If you feel in immediate danger please call the Police on 999.
You can also contact University Campus Security on 0161 247 2222 or via the SafeZone App – this app alerts university security when you are in need on or around university property, we recommend downloading it to your phone.
If you aren’t in immediate danger you can report to the Police by calling 101 or online via the true vision.
You can report any incident to the University via Report and Support. If the perpetrator is another student, the University can investigate and take action through the Student Code of Conduct.
We are a hate crime reporting centre so you can also report incidents through The Students’ Union Advice Centre and they can help navigate all of your options. For more in-depth information about this please visit our website.
If you need emotional support you can contact the University Counselling, Mental Health and Wellbeing team or the University Chaplain, Mohammed Ullah.
Unfortunately hate crimes and hate incidents can happen anywhere, including university environments. If you are ever in a situation of being prejudiced, please remember:

2. Look after yourself and protect your wellbeing in whatever next steps you decide to take
3. You’re not alone in this. We will support you in any way that we can in the Advice Service and we also encourage you to reach out to friends and family
