Just found out you're coming to uni at Manchester Met? Here's your ultimate pre-uni checklist, written by students who’ve done it all before – Katy and Emma.

👥 Join group chats

Seeing a friendly face when you arrive somewhere new can really make a difference. There’s lots of Freshers’ group chats, where you can get to know people on your course or in your flat before you even arrive. Join the Freshers 2023/2024 Facebook group to start making some connections.

🎪 Check out The Union's Welcome events

Are you ready for Welcome Week? The Union at Manchester Met won’t disappoint. Check out The Union’s Welcome events and bag your tickets early. There’s something for everyone, whether you want to unwind with a chilled evening of sunset yoga, party at a club night with deals on drinks, or even a place to entertain your kids and meet students like you. Some events might need a pre-booked ticket, but others you can just turn up to - like the iconic Freshers Fair.

🗒️ Get organised

Getting ready for uni looks different for everyone, but for lots of people it’ll mean packing and buying new supplies. Get ahead of schedule and make a list of what you’ve already got, and what you need. Online student forums, as well as friends and family can be great for tips on what you do and don’t need.

If you’re travelling from abroad or you forget something, don’t stress; You can pick up cheap bedding and household essentials at Asda in Hulme. Make sure to pop into The Union Shop at the heart of campus, where you can get your food and stationary essentials, as well as an umbrella (a must-have for Manchester).

🍝 Practice your chef skills

Whether you’re moving into halls or staying at home, uni’s a great opportunity for independence. If you’ve never done it before, it’s time to put on your chef’s hat and get a few quick and easy recipes under your belt. If you already enjoy rustling up a good meal, experiment with meals you can freeze in bulk to save time during those late-night study sessions.

TikTok is a hub full of creative, but easy meal inspo, or head to YouTube for tonnes of tasty tutorials. You could also consider subscriptions like Hello Fresh or Gousto, who deliver fresh ingredients and recipes right to your door.

🎨 Explore your interests

Starting university doesn't mean bidding farewell to your favourite sports and hobbies; in fact, it's the perfect opportunity to dive deeper into them! Before you start, have a look at all the societies on offer; whether you're into arts, sports, or gaming there’s something for you to get stuck into.

Make sure to head over to Freshers Fair, where you can meet the clubs and societies and sign up for any that take your fancy. If you’re hoping to pick up a new sport or hobby, even better, sign up for as many as you can to find like-minded people.
