Who are we? 

The Union, Manchester Metropolitan University, is an independent, registered charity dedicated to enhancing the student experience for over 39,000 students- run by students, for students.

We are entering an exciting new chapter, with a new CEO and a renewed focus on our mission to support every student at Manchester Met University in achieving personal success. With vibrant clubs and societies, support services and commercial activity through our events, bar and retail, we are proud to play a key role in helping students thrive.

We’re now seeking a strategic individual to join our Trustee Board as Chair, helping us define the future of our organisation and ensuring we deliver on our promise to be inclusive, impactful, and student focused.

Key responsibilities

As Chair of the Board of Trustees, you will:

  • Provide inclusive and strategic leadership to the Board of Trustees
  • Work closely with the Chief Executive to set and monitor strategic objectives
  • Chair Board meetings, ensuring productive and inclusive decision-making
  • Build strong relationships within the board and the wider The Union, MMU community
  • Ensure the Board works together with officers and staff to prioritise students' belonging, wellbeing, and success in everything we do

Who are we looking for?

We’re seeking someone who:

  • Brings significant experience of strategic leadership, within voluntary, public or corporate environment, and ideally previous NED / trustee experience
  • Has strong governance expertise, with the ability to balance accountability, strategic vision, and collaboration
  • Is passionate about equity, inclusion, and championing student success
  • Is a collaborative team player who can commit to collective leadership and can build and nurture strong relationships
  • Is committed to ensuring students remain at the heart of everything The Union does
